It started with a simple breakfast question. My daughter looked down at her shirt and asked, “What does the T in T-shirt actually stand for?” I laughed at first because I thought the answer would be obvious. Then I paused and realized I had worn T-shirts my whole life without ever thinking about it.
I started asking people around me, and the answers were all over the place. Some thought it meant “training shirt.” Others guessed it had something to do with golf tees. A few people just stared for a moment and admitted they had never wondered about it either.
Then the answer finally made sense. The “T” simply comes from the shape of the shirt. When you lay it flat, the body and sleeves form the letter T. That was it. No complicated meaning, no secret history, just the shape staring at us the whole time.
The funny part was how surprised everyone felt once they heard it. It is one of those tiny everyday facts that seems too simple to miss, but somehow most people do. Now every time I see a T-shirt, I cannot help noticing the shape and wondering how I never saw it before.
