He Opened a Wall After Finding Woodpecker Damage—and Nearly 700 Pounds of Acorns Came Pouring Out

After more than 20 years in pest control, Nick Castro had seen plenty of unusual things hidden inside homes. But one California job left even him astonished. A homeowner had noticed a woodpecker repeatedly drilling holes into the house’s exterior siding. The damage seemed relatively minor—until Castro investigated what was happening behind the walls.

The bird wasn’t simply pecking at the wood. It had been using the openings to store acorns. Instead of remaining near the holes, many of the nuts slipped into the hollow spaces behind the siding, where they quietly accumulated. Each trip added just a little more, but the woodpecker kept returning with another acorn, then another.

When Castro opened part of the wall, the hidden stash began spilling out. The acorns weren’t confined to one small spot; the accumulation reportedly extended through wall cavities toward the attic. By the time the cleanup was complete, the amount removed was estimated at roughly 700 pounds of acorns—an astonishing discovery from what had started as a few suspicious holes in the siding.

The explanation was surprisingly simple. Woodpeckers sometimes store food in holes and cavities, but the house had created an unintended trap: the acorns could fall beyond the bird’s reach. The woodpecker appeared to be filling a pantry without realizing that much of its food was disappearing into inaccessible spaces. What looked like a clever storage strategy had become a major problem for the homeowner.

Castro’s team reportedly removed the acorns and addressed the openings so the bird couldn’t continue using the wall as a storage site. The woodpecker was left unharmed, while the homeowner planned further repairs, including new siding. The unusual discovery is a reminder that small signs of wildlife activity can sometimes point to much larger hidden problems—and that a few holes in a house may conceal a story nobody would expect.
