You switch on the bathroom light late at night and suddenly spot a tiny, silvery creature racing across the floor. Before you can get a closer look, it disappears beneath a cabinet. It might seem harmless, but if you keep finding these unusual insects in your home, there could be a reason worth investigating. Meet the silverfish—a common household pest that may be telling you something about your indoor environment.
Despite their strange appearance and fish-like movements, silverfish are generally harmless to people and pets. They don’t sting and aren’t known to transmit diseases to humans. However, that doesn’t mean you should ignore them completely. When their numbers increase, they can damage books, paper, cardboard, wallpaper, and fabrics because they feed on materials containing starches and other carbohydrates.
So why do they appear in the first place? Silverfish prefer dark, sheltered places, particularly areas with high humidity. Bathrooms, basements, kitchens, closets, and spaces beneath sinks can provide ideal hiding spots. Frequent sightings may point to excess moisture, poor ventilation, or a hidden plumbing leak. However, finding one silverfish doesn’t automatically mean your home has a serious moisture problem.
The good news is that a few practical steps can make your home less attractive to these insects. Repair leaking pipes, improve ventilation in bathrooms, reduce excessive indoor humidity, and keep storage areas clean and dry. Store important papers, books, and cardboard items in dry, sealed containers when possible. Seal cracks and gaps where insects may hide, and vacuum areas where dust and debris accumulate.
The most important thing to remember is this: silverfish themselves usually aren’t dangerous, but repeated sightings deserve attention. Rather than panicking when you spot one, check for damp areas and possible hiding places. Sometimes, the smallest visitors can remind us to look more closely at the condition of our homes—and addressing the underlying problem may be the best way to keep them from returning.
