Before You Leave for Vacation, Try This Simple Sink Trick to Help Prevent Bad Smells

Before heading off on vacation, most people remember to lock the doors, take out the trash, and check their appliances. But there’s one small household detail that can make an unwelcome surprise when they return: the sink drain. A few days without use can sometimes lead to unpleasant odors, especially if the water barrier inside the plumbing trap dries out.

The plumbing trap beneath your sink normally holds water that helps prevent sewer gases from entering your home. When a sink remains unused for an extended period, some of that water can evaporate, allowing smells to escape. This is more likely in warm conditions or in drains that are rarely used.

One simple precaution is to cover the drain opening with a suitable drain stopper before leaving. Some people suggest placing a paper towel over the opening and weighing it down with an upside-down glass. While this may provide a temporary cover, it is not a guaranteed way to stop odors or insects, and a proper drain stopper is generally the more practical option. Never leave anything that could fall into the drain or create a hazard.

When you return home, remove the cover and run water briefly to replenish the trap. If the sink smells fresh afterward, the problem may have been related to the unused drain. However, persistent sewer-like odors, gurgling, or slow drainage may point to a plumbing issue that needs further investigation.

The takeaway? A quick drain check is an easy addition to your vacation-preparation routine. Use a proper stopper if you want to cover the opening, refill infrequently used traps before leaving when appropriate, and investigate any lingering odors rather than relying on a simple household trick to solve the problem.
