Dad left unrecognizable after losing his lips and four limbs to flesh-eating bug – but look at him today

Alex Lewis, a father from Stockbridge, Hampshire, faced a nightmare in November 2013 when what he thought was a simple cold quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation. The infection, a type A streptococcal bacterium, triggered toxic shock syndrome, sepsis, and necrotizing fasciitis—a flesh-eating disease that rapidly destroyed his limbs and parts of his face. Rushed to hospital, doctors gave him a mere three-percent chance of survival, warning his family to prepare for the worst.

Over the following months, Alex endured multiple amputations of all his limbs and reconstructive surgeries on his face, including a groundbreaking procedure to rebuild both his lips using skin from his shoulder. Despite excruciating pain and countless medical challenges, he refused to give up. Nurses and doctors witnessed his relentless determination as he fought not only to survive but to regain a sense of normalcy in his life.

Against all odds, Alex made an astonishing recovery. From living a seemingly ordinary life running pubs, raising his son, and enjoying golf and social outings, he transitioned to a life defined by resilience and courage. Today, he has achieved remarkable feats, including climbing a mountain, proving that the human spirit can triumph over even the most devastating circumstances.

Now happily living with his wife Lucy Townsend and their son Sam, Alex’s story serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate life’s everyday blessings. His journey from near death to thriving against incredible odds inspires countless others to persevere, showing that determination, love, and hope can overcome unimaginable adversity.
