At first, I brushed off my sister’s behavior. She had always enjoyed attention, and when she began visiting more often, I was happy to welcome her. My husband treated her kindly, just as he treated the rest of my family. Then her overnight stays started making me uncomfortable.

After showering, she would wander into shared rooms wearing only a towel. Sometimes she settled on the couch. Other times she appeared in the kitchen while my husband prepared breakfast. As it happened repeatedly, I decided to ask her about it.

Her answer caught me off guard. “Relax,” she laughed. “I’m just testing him.” When I asked what she meant, she explained that she wanted to find out whether he was as loyal as everyone believed. I had expected an awkward apology. Instead, she treated my marriage like an experiment she was entitled to conduct.

Over the following weeks, she kept looking for his attention, complimenting herself and asking questions that put him in an uncomfortable position. My husband showed no interest. When she entered the room, he continued what he was doing, giving her none of the reaction she seemed to want.

Watching him, I realized my discomfort had never been evidence that I distrusted him. It came from my sister repeatedly creating a situation I had already questioned. Calling it a “test” did not make it protective or thoughtful. She was asking whether he respected our marriage while overlooking whether she did.
