Skin changes in sensitive areas can be alarming, especially when small whitish-yellow bumps suddenly appear. Many people immediately fear infections or serious conditions, but in many cases, the cause is harmless. One of the most common explanations is something called Fordyce spots, a natural and non-threatening skin feature that affects a large percentage of the population.

Fordyce spots are visible sebaceous (oil) glands that can appear on the lips, inside the cheeks, or in the genital area. They are present in up to 80% of people and are completely normal. Although they may look unusual, they are not contagious, not painful, and not a sign of poor hygiene or disease. They often become more noticeable during or after puberty, especially in individuals with oilier skin.

Because of their appearance, Fordyce spots are sometimes confused with other conditions such as genital warts, herpes, or cysts. This misunderstanding can lead to unnecessary stress or panic. If there is any doubt, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis rather than self-diagnosing or attempting treatment at home.

While treatment is not medically necessary, some people choose to reduce their appearance for cosmetic reasons. Options may include laser treatments, topical creams, or minor procedures performed by specialists. However, experts strongly advise against picking or squeezing these spots, as this can lead to irritation or infection. Maintaining good hygiene and a simple skincare routine can help keep the skin healthy and minimize their visibility.
