Doctors’ Advice About Morning Eggs May Surprise You—But There’s One Important Catch

For years, eggs were blamed for raising cholesterol and increasing the risk of heart disease. Many families began throwing away the yolks, believing that the yellow center was the most dangerous part. But nutrition research has since painted a more complicated picture—and it may change the way you think about breakfast.

For most healthy adults, eating eggs in the morning can be part of a nutritious diet. One large egg provides about 6 grams of high-quality protein, along with important nutrients such as vitamin B12, selenium, and choline, which helps support normal brain function. Eggs can also help you feel satisfied after a meal, making them a convenient choice for a filling breakfast.

So, what about cholesterol? Eggs contain dietary cholesterol, but the cholesterol you eat does not affect everyone’s blood cholesterol in the same way. Genetics, overall eating habits, and existing health conditions all matter. Saturated fat from foods such as fatty processed meats and butter is also an important factor in LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol levels. That means the entire breakfast—not just the eggs—deserves attention.

The yolk is another part of the story that many people misunderstand. While egg whites provide protein with very little fat, the yolk contains several valuable nutrients, including choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Removing it may make sense for certain dietary needs, but avoiding yolks solely out of fear is not necessary for everyone. Pairing eggs with vegetables and whole-grain toast can help create a more balanced meal.

However, eggs are not a miracle food, and eating them every day is not automatically the healthiest choice for everyone. People with high LDL cholesterol, familial hypercholesterolemia, or certain other health conditions may need individualized advice about dietary cholesterol. The biggest lesson is simple: healthy eating depends on the overall pattern of your diet, not one food alone. Instead of fearing your morning eggs, focus on balance, sensible portions, and the foods you serve alongside them.
